Do you ever find that question hard to answer? I do. I mean, how can you possibly accurately describe your music preferences in one or two sentences or even by just listing a few favorite bands? That just doesn’t cut it for me, music is too much a part of my life, it shapes who I am. I much prefer to show people what I listen to.

My favorite way to go about showing people what kind of music I like is by using Last.fm. If you don’t have a Last.fm account, go get one here. I’ll wait…

Now, let’s get you edumicated. Last.fm will scrobble the music that you listen to on iTunes and on your iPod and upload it to your account. Then you can see which bands you listen to most and which songs are currently stuck in your head. You can also add friends and see what they spend time listening to. I have found tons of new music through friends on Last.fm. Don’t forget to add me as a friend so that I can see and hear what you listen to.

After you chalk up a few hundred listens on Last.fm, head over to LastGraph and plug in in your Last.fm username. You’ll be able to analyze your listening habits more than you ever thought possible and get cool timeline graphs like the one above.

I’m a little late on this one too, like 10 months. I never profess to be the first to know about awesome indie music, I just pass along the good stuff when I hear it.

Vampire Weekend released their first album in January of this year and it has been all over blogs and speakers from SOHO down to Brighton.

I’m a big fan of their indie pop/rock because it is happy music. It has an island feel - almost like steel drums and reggae - without the dreadlocks and the… steel drums? The vocals and melodies are catchy and I bet you’ll find yourself singing and dancing along.

I lived in NYC for a couple of years and I’ll tell you, listening to Vampire Weekend’s lyrics, you can tell that these guys have been around the city for a while. I love it.

I really really like Pavement. From what I can tell, they haven’t had a major event since 1999 at the Glastonbury Festival. However, 2009 would be the 10-year anniversary of their last show- reunion tour? I sure hope so.

I would peg Pavement as pure indie. They toured and released several albums without the backing of a major label. They were around throughout the 90’s and there music is still potent a decade later. I love that they can make great indie rock without taking themselves too seriously. I mean, they did a song for Schoolhouse Rock, can you get any cooler than that? I submit that you cannot! Check out the video and get some tunes after the jump…

I’m definitely not breaking any news with this post, just passing along some good indie music that really hits the spot.

From what I gather, Obidiah Parker is a 3-person set up out of Scottsdale, Arizona. They started playing together at a church and around the Phoenix area. To be honest, I have only heard two songs by these guys and neither of them are songs written by the band.

Music and a video after the jump.
