God and the Devil Are Raging Inside Me by Brand NewBrand New is most commonly described as being Rock or even Alternative Rock but has roots in New York local hardcore. Even though they’ve been around since 2000 the band gained widespread appeal with the album “Deja Entendu” which is French for “Already Heard,” probably a play on Deja Vu, “Already Seen”.

Their greatest strength is their song writing. Lyrics are easy to hear, understand and beg to be sung along to. Most songs have a quiet build up with a satisfying speed up and blow out. The explemplar of their style would be the song “Sic Transit Gloria.” The title is taken from the latin phrase “Sic Transit Gloria Mundi” which means “thus passes the glory of the world.” Check out the media after the jump for a listen.

If Brand New has a weakness, it is their live shows. They seem to have a hard time keeping in time and playing well with each other. They are worth a listen and have great music for guitar and bass players to learn.

Not only is their music and lyrics really good on the ’sic transit gloria’ album, but their new album ‘The Devil and God Are Raging Inside Me’ is one of the best complete albums I know.

Most bands fail to follow up a good album with a great album, but Brand New did it. . . and they did it very well.

the other thing about brand new…
[16:30] Jon: is that with their last two releases… they have been right at the beginning of what is cool
[16:30] Jon: deja ushered in some really rad music
[16:31] Jon: and god and the devil, a totally reinvented sound, is like nothing else
[16:31] Jon: it’s like they set a standard
[16:31] Jon: or set the course
[16:31] Jon: that others will follow and do well with
[16:31] Jon: but brand new invents it
[16:32] Jon: that’s why their name is so fitting
[16:32] Jon: like seriously, a band that started out punk (”jude law and a semester abroad” is a perfect example)
[16:33] Jon: moved on with good timing to deja entendu
[16:33] Jon: which is still amazing even now
[16:33] Jon: and then they changed it up for the new sound that they have now
[16:33] Jon: i’m sure that they have alienated some of their “jude law” fans
[16:34] Jon: but i just think that they have grown and adapted in a great way
    [16:36] Jon Sandy: yeah I agree…
[16:36] Jon Sandy: brand new is amazing
[16:36] Jon Sandy: they are always ‘brand new’ stuff and great music
